A public inquiry into the expansion of Stansted Airport has been delayed.
The inquiry has been deferred for a second time following a dispute over the BAA’s ownership of the airport. The Competition Commission ordered BAA to sell Stansted, Gatwick as well as a Scottish airport, but BAA has appealed.
John Denham, communities secretary, said: “It is clear to me that it is neither feasible nor realistic to announce the start date of the Stansted public inquiry until such time as the outcome of the appeal is known.
“While there is no set timetable for the appeal process, I understand that it might take around nine months to complete.”
A ruling on the Competition Commission’s request is expected early next year.
