Scotland's Museums Think Tank has called for the designation of a new national agency to support the country's museums and galleries.
It is one of a number of recommendations that have been put forward in a new report, which aims to ensure a 'sustainable future' for the sector.
The proposed new body would also be responsible for the development of a national museums strategy.
Other measures also included specific Scottish Government funding for three industrial attractions - the Scottish Maritime, Mining and Fisheries Museums.
A new forum of experts to assist in the development of the new museums strategy and the establishment of a federation of industrial museums were also proposed.
Scottish culture minister Fiona Hyslop said: "The Think Tank has identified a clear need for a national body with responsibility for developing and implementing a national museums strategy that takes account of the local, national and independent provision.
Museums Galleries Scotland chief executive officer Joanne Orr added: "We are pleased that a way forward for Scotland's museums and galleries has been identified."
