Royal Court designs go on show
POSTED 18 Feb 2009 . BY Pete Hayman
Plans put forward by seven shortlisted architects for the refurbishment of the Grade II-listed Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool have been put on public display until the end of the month.

Designs for the revamp of the 1,250-seat theatre, which has one of the biggest revolve stages outside the West End of London, can be viewed until 27 February in the Architruck, the Royal Institute of British Architect's (RIBA) purpose-built mobile exhibition space, which is situated on St George's Plateau.

The shortlisted architects, selected from a list of 50 entrants for The Royal Court Liverpool Next Stage Competition, are Allford Hall Monaghan Morris; Burrel Foley Fischer; Nord Architecture; Pentagram; Studio Andrew Todd; Studio 3; and Union North.

Each of the seven companies are now currently working on detailed design proposals, with improved public and disabled access and circulation within the building among the main challenges to be addressed by the competition's judges.

Jonathan Falkingham, trustee of the Royal Court Liverpool Trust and chief executive of Urban Splash, said: "The public in Liverpool will now get a chance to see the initial proposals by the exciting architectural practices shortlisted for the development of a city institution."

A decision on the winning design entry is expected to be made by early March.
