Plans unveiled for Brighton Arena
POSTED 07 Jan 2004 . BY
Brighton & Hove Council has revealed plans for the £54m Brighton International Arena, to be built at Black Rock.

Designed to be the focal point of a development on the seafront adjacent to Brighton Marina, the two-acre site will include residential and mixed-use elements including an ice-pad with seating for 8,000 spectators and a Jayne Torvill and Robin Cousins-run Ice Skating Academy.

The facility can be converted into an arena with a capacity of 10,000 for concerts or other events and will be supported by a chef restaurant, bars and other restaurants open throughout the day.

There will also be a museum dedicated to the city’s ice hockey team, the Brighton Tigers.

The scheme is being designed and built by a consortium including London-based firm, S&P Architects and is due to be submitted for detailed planning permission this spring, with opening scheduled for 2007.

S&P is working with English Heritage to ensure the Arena falls below the height of the Black Rock parapet wall and so does not obstruct views of the listed Kemptown Terraces. The design will also reflect the maritime landscape where possible – including using a sedum roof to create a rooftop nature reserve.

The provision of an arena is part of Brighton & Hove Council’s strategy to raise the profile of the city and develop the seafront to provide sports and leisure facilities. Details:www.s-parchitects.com
