The Woodhorn colliery visitor attraction in Ashington, Northumberland, is set to reopen this month following a £16m redevelopment.
The revamped grade II-listed pit-head buildings provide an insight into colliery life with an exhibition on the Ashington Group miners’ paintings and computer simulations produced by software developers Atacama and Centre Screen. Visitors can also experience what it feels like to be trapped underground on the Darkside Tour.
The Heritage Lottery Fund contributed £10m towards the project – the largest ever grant awarded in the north east – which was designed by Leicester-based Haley Sharpe, with input from Scottish architects RMJM.
