New theatre for WWII Museum
POSTED 22 Oct 2009 . BY Luke Tuchscherer
The National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, US, is to open a new 250-seat theatre, which forms part of its US$300m renovation.

The Solomon Victory Theatre is the centrepiece of the renovation – which will quadruple the size of the museum – and will be officially opened on 6 November, alongside the Stage Door Canteen and the American Sector restaurant.

The theatre boasts a 30ft tall sharkstooth scrim screen that stretches to 150ft wide. LA ProPoint worked on the theatre, which will exclusively screen Beyond All Boundaries, a documentary produced by Tom Hanks.

Andy Hanlen, LA ProPoint’s project manager, said: “The Solomon Victory Theatre project was complex, involving multiple show action elements, including the incorporation of moving 3D props and scenic elements such as city flats, a 1940s style radio, a death camp guard tower, D-Day tank traps, a Naval anti-aircraft gun turret and a B-17 bomber.

“We also provided the 40ft main show curtain and motorised track system, motorised scrims and blackout drapes, borders and other soft goods, not to mention that oversized main projection screen. We weren’t simply helping to build a theatre, this felt more like building a world.”

The museum will open other new facilities over the next few years, including the Restoration Pavilion in 2010, the Special Exhibition Gallery in 2011 and the Land, Sea & Air Pavilion in 2014.
