New report outlines vision for transformation of Ontario Place

A new report has outlined a series of recommendations for the transformation of the 96-acre (39-hectare) Ontario Place into an "innovative, year-round destination" in Toronto, Canada.

The document - drawn up by the Minister's Advisory Panel on Ontario Place Revitalization - calls for the waterfront park to remain accessible and "completely barrier-free" to visitors.

In order to maintain a year-round offer, however, the report also recommends the creation of a new venue for hosting cultural events and examining the feasibility of a hotel or resort.

A residential element is also proposed, while Ontario Place should be "a place for people to work - not just visit or live" through the provision of commercial and business facilities.

Meanwhile, the document calls for a commitment to design excellence in all aspects of future redevelopment to minimise the "ecological footprint" of the park's transformation.

Government of Ontario minister of tourism, culture and sport Michael Chan said: "The panel undertook a thorough process to develop their recommendations.

"I look forward to reviewing the recommendations and responding in a timely fashion to how together, we'll revitalise Ontario Place."

A number of facilities at Ontario Place have closed this year as a result of the project, with the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre and Echo Beach among a number of venues still open.
