New green map for Stirling
POSTED 30 Aug 2006 . BY Helen Patenall
A new green tourism map for Stirling, Scotland, has been published to help both visitors and locals navigate their way around the city’s eco-friendly and sustainable attractions, businesses and facilities.

The new map is the result of a collaborative effort between VisitScotland and Stirling Council.

The map was inspired by the ethos of the Green Map System (GMS), a worldwide community-based movement founded by New Yorker Wendy Brawer in 1995. The mission of GMS is to promote sustainability and community participation by offering tools and a global iconography for making environmental and cultural maps.

Ewan Fairweather, VisitScotland sector development manager, said: “This map is based on the ideas of ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ in their widest possible senses. For Stirling, the sustainability of its historic sites and Scottish culture – as well as its position as an urban base from which to explore the surrounding countryside – is the key to tourism.

“The map uses GMS icons to highlight sustainable facilities in eight categories such as natural crafts, green spaces, transport, arts and culture, historic sites, sports and food and drink, including traditional ale pubs.”

The map is available for free from tourist information points as well as libraries and community centres in Stirling. Details: www.visitscotland.co.uk
