Portsmouth’s Cumberland House natural history museum has re-opened following a makeover to make the facility more family-friendly.

The museum, run by Portsmouth City Council, had been closed for five months for the refurbishment of the reception area, the main ground floor gallery, the stairwell and one of the first-floor galleries.

Also new is a library of wildlife books and a new large screen showing wildlife footage.

Councillor Lynne Stagg said: “A lot of time and effort has gone into the refurbishment of the museum. Outdated displays have been removed, the beautiful proportions and architectural features of the building have been revealed.

“More attractive, versatile and accessible spaces have been created. The refurbished ground floor gallery is the perfect setting for the fabulous new exhibition.”

"It's a phenomenal display and the children are so proud of what they've done. They loved doing it."

The museum is planning more hands-on activities, more fun for children, and more chances to explore and learn about the city's natural areas and wildlife.
