Cheshire-based design consultant Mather and Co has been appointed to work on a five-year restoration and redevelopment project at York Minster, which will be carried out in phases.

The group will work alongside the Dean and Chapter at the Minster, which has been handed £10.5m by the Heritage Lottery Fund for its York Minster Revealed scheme.

York Minster Revealed is intended to open up the architectural and cultural significance of the Gothic cathedral to a wider audience, as well as the building's place in history.

In the first stage of the restoration, Mather and Co will work on the interpretation of the East Front of York Minister, which includes the Great East Window.

Multi-layered, mixed media presentations will help depict the stonemason and glazier skills, as well as guiding guests around the cathedral and helping to transform the visitor experience.

A second phase of work will see Mather and Co redisplay the historically-significant crypt; undercroft and treasury areas of York Minister, which will be completed by spring 2013.
