Marine-themed Expo 2012 to open for three-month run in South Korea

The 73m (240ft) Sky Tower created from a pair of abandoned silo and the Big-O landmark will be among the attractions at Expo 2012, which opens in Yeosu, South Korea, on 12 May.

The ocean-themed Yeosu Expo aims to provide visitors from around the world with a clearer understanding of how seas, oceans and coasts form an integral part of the natural environment.

Expo 2012 has transformed Yeosu's former port and is also designed to provide a showcase for the latest technology designed to develop underwater resources in a sustainable manner.

Among the thematic facilities at the expo will be the Sky Tower, with the first of the two silos housing a theatre using films and technology to provide interactive content.

The second of the Sky Tower's silos will house a Seawater Desalination Facility, which will give visitors the opportunity to learn how seawater can be turned into drinking water.

Elsewhere, the Big-O has been constructed to give visitors an insight into the expo's theme - including experience zones hosting large-scale events and cultural performances.

The O itself will feature a water screen inside the outer rim, which will show films and other videos. The outer rim will also produce special effects, such as laser shows.

Meanwhile, the Expo Digital Gallery (EDG) stretches 415m (1,362ft) and features a 218m (715ft)-long LED screen on the ceiling to show films while cultural events take place below.

Yeosu 2012 organising committee chair Kang Dong-suk said: "The EDG is a multi-media environment venue that will feature diverse cultural contents, allowing visitors to have fun and enjoy beautiful images and a dynamic street culture."
