London's Goldsmiths University announces winning architect for new art gallery design

From a shortlist of six architectural practices, Goldsmiths College, London, has announced that Assemble - a London based architecture collective - will be designing their new £1.8m ($3.1m, €2.2m) gallery in South East London.

Housed in Grade II listed swimming baths, Assemble’s design for the gallery will incorporate the original black steel water tanks as part of the new exhibition space, while creating new gallery spaces tacked onto the outside of the building.

The panel of heavy-weight arts judges included the likes of Sir Antony Gormley and Sir David Chipperfield. Gormley commented that: "The arrival of a gallery is an important moment in the development of Goldsmiths. This will become a resource for the university and for London: a place where students and the wider public can experience and test-drive new forms of art as well as see relevant examples of art from the past, ancient and modern.”

Paloma Strelitz and Adam Willis from Assemble, whose previous projects include a pop-up venue in a flyover near London and a cinema in a disused petrol station, were naturally very happy with their competition win: "We envisage the gallery becoming a new centre for the arts in south London, and are honoured to contribute to an institution that is further promoting its identity as an inspirational source of creativity for students, practitioners and the public.”

Planned to open in 2016, the build will be paid for by external donations. A large auction will also held at Christie’s Auction House in February 2015, selling off artwork donated by Goldsmiths’ alumni to help to raise funds.
