Irish 13th century castle opens after 4.3m euro revamp
POSTED 27 Feb 2013 . BY Aoife Dowling
Ireland's 13th century Athlone castle in West Meath, which has endured rival families, and sieges, has undergone a 4.3m euro renovation to become a leading tourist attraction.

The castle, that was taken over by Free State troops from the British in 1922, has received a total refurbishment as well as a new visitor centre.

Funded by Failte Ireland and Athlone Town Council, the castle has recently reopened with eight galleries chronicling the history of the town.

Exhibits let visitors build a castle, try out medieval weapons, see what generals would have worn and experience a 360-degree projection of the Siege of Athlone.

The new experience was developed by Event Communications; the company behind the Giant's Causeway Visitor Centre and Belfast's Titanic Museum.

First built as a timber fort, Athlone Castle evolved into a bold, defensive building. A range of new 3D maps, audio-visual installations and illustrations feature to bring the stories and characters of Athlone to life.

Colm Breheny, client services manager, Fáilte Ireland said: "At Ireland's ancient gateway to the West, we now have a fully 21st century visitor experience which blends Athlone's historic sites into a lively hi-tech and interactive tourism experience.

"This investment clearly signifies Fáilte Ireland's commitment to ensuring that there are plenty of reasons for visitors to come and indeed return to Athlone this year, and into the future."
