A report by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) says that zoos in Indonesia are below standard.

This is despite the fact that SEAZA states one of it's aims is to 'develop and maintain high standards of animal displays and welfare.'

International animal charity, WSPA, visited ten zoos in Indonesia over five months in 2001. Its report claims that almost all of the enclosures in zoos fail to accommodate the basic behavioural needs of the animals, 82% fail to provide enough space for animals and around half of the animals do not have sufficient access to water.

Rob laidlaw of WSPA says: ' Indonesia is home to some of the worst zoos in the world. These places are little more than squalid venues for the entertainment of overseas visitors and have nothing to do with animal welfare and conservation.'

WSPA is campaigning for all animal shows in the region to be stopped immediately, and wants to see the closure of the worst zoos in the area.
