Hungary's Debrecen welcomes eco-friendly football stadium

A progressive 20,000-capacity stadium has opened as the centrepiece of an environmentally focused regeneration project in the Hungarian city of Debrecen.

Created by Bord Architectural Studio, the redesigned Nagyerdo Stadium has seen the introduction of a leading sporting venue into an area usually characterised by green space and forests.

The project has been designed to bring the green-space area in-line with the city, giving people access to a multi-purpose events centre, while also maintaining the natural beauty of the Nagyerdo region.

The stadium features a transitional promenade that leads guests from the forest and park area into a man-made world, where they can access the stadium, as well as bars, restaurants, exhibition areas and fitness and wellness facilities, which serve locals regardless of whether a game is being held at the stadium or not.

One particularly intriguing feature allows visitors of the stadium’s guest boxes to experience a view that not only opens up onto the football pitch, but also onto the enclosing forest and park space around the site.

Rebuilt in an area that is home to protected oak trees, the new structure was created to replace an existing football stadium at the site, which was originally built in the 1930s.
