France sells itself as an “all year round” choice

Tourism must be looked at nationally rather than region by region and as an all year round industry, rather than just the summer season, says the French government, following a year plagued by disasters.

Pollution from the wrecked oil tanker Prestige, the war in Iraq, SARS, floods, forest fires, an unprecedented heat wave and cancellations of major festivals by artists’ unions all contributed to a “mood of pessimism” says the Ministry of Public Amenities.

Leon Bertrand, tourism minister, has announced a series of measures to boost visitor numbers for 2004.

A campaign has been launched to encourage Americans to visit France following a froideur between the two countries over the Iraq war.

A national survey will begin on the damage to tourism caused by the oil pollution from the Prestige tanker.

Over one million euros will be distributed to campsite and caravan park owners hit by the fires and storms in the Maine, Loire and Var regions.

The Aquitaine region will benefit a 1.4 million euros publicity campaign. Details: www.equipement.gouv.fr
