First Minister Carwyn Jones has officially opened the Nant Gwrtheyrn centre in Gwynedd, North Wales, following the completion of a £5m refurbishment.

The former Victorian quarry village has been transformed into a new tourism hub, which is designed to help attract investment into the region and features four-star accommodation.

A function room and heritage displays have also been created as part of the scheme, which received £3.8m from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The Heritage Lottery Fund; the Linbury Foundation; the Pantyfedwen Foundation; Hansen; and Gwynedd County Council also contributed towards the work.

Jones said: "The new facilities will attract many more day visitors, tourists and local visitors for learning and to enjoy its unique location bringing greater economic benefits to the area."

A new track and path to improve accessibility from the village to the nearby beach is also to be unveiled, and forms part of wider efforts to create an All Wales Coastal Path by 2012.
