FIFA plans new museum for Zurich base
POSTED 20 Apr 2012 . BY Pete Hayman
FIFA, the international governing body for football, is planning to establish a new museum dedicated to the sport as part of an expansion of its Zurich base in Switzerland.

Zurich City Council was informed of the proposals on 11 April in a meeting held at FIFA's base, although a design plan will need to receive validation from Zurich Municipal Council.

FIFA's executive committee has already agreed to invest approximately CHF180m (£122m, EUR150m, US$197m), which it believes shows the organisation's full support to the city.

The museum will comprise 3D animations, interactive experiences and a wide range of items relating to football's history, while the extension will also feature a café and a crèche.

Switzerland-based architect Tilla Theus will design the project, having already been involved with the creation of the existing FIFA headquarters building on the outskirts of the city.

FIFA pointed towards the success of attractions established by Manchester United and Real Madrid as its inspiration for creating its own museum in Zurich. "It is high time that world football had a meeting place for its millions of fans," said president Sepp Blatter.
