Luna Park in Melbourne has unveiled two projects to refurbish its iconic Scenic Railway – the only wooden roller coaster of its kind in Australia.
The Scenic Railway, built in 1911, was the main attraction of Melbourne’s Luna Park when it opened in 1912 and is now heritage listed with the National Trust.
The two projects include the refurbishment and restoration of a pinnacle section of the track and the production of a life size mural for the Scenic Railway Station.
The work being undertaken is largely due to the effects the recent extended drought and climate change have had on the ride.
“There is no doubt climate change is having an impact on our wonderful Scenic Railway,” said Executive Director Mary Stuart.
“The structure is being affected by the drying out of the water table and soil movement, in the same way that houses and other older buildings are showing signs of the impact.
“The Scenic Railway is a treasure and we will do all we can to restore, protect and preserve it for the enjoyment of future generations of Australians.”
