New Perth Stadium could host 2022 Commonwealth Games
POSTED 20 Mar 2017 . BY Matthew Campelli
The stadium is due to be completed before the start of the 2018 AFL league
The soon-to-be-built 60,000-capacity Perth Stadium could be the centre point for a Commonwealth Games bid after the Western Australian city threw its hat into the ring to host the 2022 edition.

According to reports in Australia, Western Australia’s new sports minister Mick Murray said a bid would be looked at “in depth”.

He added that while there may be some challenges getting the financial package sorted out, it was a “good idea to chase it”.

If Perth wins the bid, Australia will host the Games twice in a row. The 2018 edition will take place in the Gold Coast.

The Cox Architecture-designed Perth Stadium will be the centrepiece of the bid.

The multi-purpose venue – capable of hosting Australian Football League (AFL), rugby union and league, soccer, cricket and other entertainment – will be completed before the 2018 AFL season starts.

Durban lost the right to host the 2022 Games earlier this month.

British cities, including Liverpool, Birmingham and London, have expressed an interest in staging the event.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has not yet set a deadline for its final decision on the host for the Games.
