All four Olympic 2024 bid cities through to second stage of bidding process

All four candidates bidding to host the 2024 Olympics have made it through to the second round of the bid process following an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting.

Chair of the 2024 Games’ Evaluation Commission Frank Fredericks, said that “no significant issues were flagged” with the bids lodged by Budapest, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome, and that all four cities had “embraced the Olympic Agenda 2020”.

Fredericks commented that the cities have devised a “strategic roadmap” which aligns their Games concept with the long-term development goals of their nations.

However, according to Inside the Games, Fredericks raised concerns about all four bid destinations.

Paris’ main concerns relate to security following last November’s terrorist attack which claimed the lives of 130 people, while Rome’s bid is threatened by lack of support from the leading candidate in the city’s mayoral elections, Virginia Raggi.

The potential election of Donald Trump as president of the US was highlighted as Los Angeles’ primary barrier to hosting the Games due to the perception that some countries may be less inclined to back the US bid, while Budapest will need to improve the publicity surrounding its bid.

The next stage of the bidding process requires the candidates to submit proposals regarding Governance, Legal and Venue Funding by 7 October 2016. The final step focuses on Games Delivery, Experience and Venue Legacy, which will have a submission deadline of 3 February 2017.

At the end of each stage, the IOC will confirm which cities have made the grade. A final decision on the host city will be made in Lima, Peru, in September 2017.
