Broadway Malayan to design Liverpool’s destination hub
POSTED 12 Mar 2013 . BY Aoife Dowling
Liverpool-based architecture and design company Broadway Malyan has secured a contract to design the Everton Park Destination Hub in Liverpool.

The competition, which was organised by economic development company Liverpool Vision, saw Broadway Malyan beat off stiff competition from four other Liverpool-based architects, Austin Smith Lord, Cass Associates, FVMA and Studio Three.

The winning design includes an information centre, event and gallery space and café and was deemed to make best use of the park’s panoramic views of the city and the River Mersey.

Broadway Malyan explores the notion of ‘reveal’ to maximise the city-wide view. The design uses the existing landscape combined with the linear east-west form of the building the full panorama is concealed and only revealed once visitors reach the tip of the building.

The building provides a venue for two audiences. These include park users, who will use the hubs café and amenities and visitors to the city, attracted to the hub for its
panoramic view.

The Everton Park Destination Hub is one of many initiatives taking place in the park, including a heritage trail and landscape based proposals from international artist Fritz Haeg and renowned landscape architect James Corner, which have been presented as part of Liverpool’s Biennial.

Liverpool Vision, chief executive, Max Steinberg said: “This is a major milestone on Everton Park’s journey and their design will act as a spur to approaching funding bodies to help us start the project later this year.

“It was a close run competition but Broadway Malyan’s stunning and innovative approach fit most perfectly with our ambition to make Everton Park a major tourist destination and a great community asset.”
