British Museum receives GBP10m HLF funding
POSTED 27 Jan 2012 . BY Pete Hayman
The British Museum has secured £10m towards the completion of its World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre (WCEC) in London from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

It is one of four heritage schemes across the UK to be awarded a share of £15.5m from the HLF and will bring some of its most important collections back on site at Bloomsbury.

In addition to an exhibition space, WCEC will also incorporate science laboratories; storage facilities; and conservation studios. 'Behind the scenes tours' are also proposed.

HLF chair Dame Jenny Abramsky said: "The grant for the WCEC will have a dramatic impact upon the British Museum's facilities for conservation, scientific research, storage and loans.

"The centre will vastly improve the British Museum's ability to care for the most fragile parts of its collections in the best possible conditions and will get more people involved in its work."

Other schemes to benefit from HLF funding include a new Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre due to open in Stirling, Scotland, in 2014, which has been handed £3.94m.

Porthcurno Telegraph Museum in Penzance, Cornwall, has secured £1.4m towards a new learning centre, while Puppetlink will roll-out a learning programme with the help of a £240,000 grant.

Meanwhile, initial support for a £4.8m grant towards the refurbishment of Kelvin Hall in Glasgow has also been confirmed by the HLF.
