Environmental scientist David Waines has been named manager of Bristol Aquarium, having served in the same role the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay, Cornwall, for the past seven years.

Waines, who helped rescue, rehabilitate and release nine sea turtles in his time as manager in Newquay, will now take over at Bristol's Harbourside marine life attraction.

"I am looking forward to the challenge of getting to grips with a city centre attraction and its associated market, while continuing to develop links with other attractions and businesses from Bristol and the surrounding area," he said.

In February, Bristol Aquarium announced that it had joined forces with Barcelona Aquarium, Spain, as part of a twinning initiative.
