28 June launch for London's new Emirates Air Line cable car service

Transport for London (TfL) has announced a new cable car service across the river Thames between Greenwich and the Royal Docks will launch on 28 June.

The 1.1km (0.7-mile) the Emirates Air Line has been designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and will be open to passengers in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The cable car will see 34 cabins cross the river at a height of 90m (295ft) and will have the capacity to accommodate up to 2,500 people per hour in each direction.

In addition to linking Greenwich and the Royal Docks, passengers will also have the opportunity to take a non-stop return journey to experience the views overlooking London.

Mace has provided design and construction services on the project, which has also involved Aedas, Buro Happold, Expedition, URS and cable car specialist Doppelmayr.

The new service - sponsored by Emirates Airlines under a 10-year sponsorship deal worth £36m - will be operated by Mace's specialist management firm, Macro.

TfL commissioner Peter Hendy said: "Passengers will very soon get to experience this unique and exciting new addition to London's transport network.

"Londoners and visitors to the capital will be able to experience a direct and quick way of crossing the river while enjoying the fantastic views from the cabins."
