UK Sport has announced details of a £63.5m package designed to support 27 UK sports in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The package is part of £300m made available in March to elite athletes by Chancellor Gordon Brown as part of his 2006 Budget, which was welcomed by both the British Olympic Association (BOA) and UK Sport – the bodies responsible for distributing funding to and supporting Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

A total of £17m will be invested in 2006-7 with a further £23.2m in 2007-8 and £25.1m in 2008-9.

UK Sport will review progress across the 27 sports after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to determine how the rest of the funds should be allocated.

The chair of UK Sport, Sue Campbell, said: “We have started a six year process that will not just deliver 2012 medals but help transform the high performance system in this country forever.”

Campbell also urged effective governance for all sporting bodies concerned, saying: “Public funding should never be a given – it must be earned.

“It is for the sports and athletes to prove by their performances in the next three years that this investment is justified and indeed should be increased as they build up to London 2012.”

The £300m of funding for the 27 elite sports will comprise £200m of public funding with a further £100m to be sought through the private sector.
