£15m waterpark opens in Wales ahead of Easter weekend

A new £15m (US$19.5m, €17.3m) waterpark has opened its doors to the public in Rhyl, Wales, with three flumes for thrillseekers to enjoy.

SC2, which stretches across 1,200sq m (13,000sq ft), opened on 12 April and welcomed more than 2,000 visitors over the weekend.

It will be this weekend, however, with public holidays on Friday and Monday in the UK, that the park will be hoping to record big numbers of visitors through its doors.

The park was supplied by waterpark design, engineering, manufacturing and installation specialist Polin and is open year-round, offering outdoor options for the summer months with a sun deck, seating terrace, beach changing huts, a bar and terrace, as well as outdoor splash pads.

Having received its planning approval from Denbighshire County Council (DCC), construction began that same year and finalised this.

"We’re thrilled with the response during our first full weekend open to the public," said Councillor Bobby Feeley, Denbighshire’s cabinet lead member for wellbeing and independence with responsibility for leisure services.

"There’s a real buzz surrounding SC2 across the whole of North Wales and we are very proud of this exciting new attraction and first-class facility."

Alliance Leisure was heavily involved in the project from inception, supporting feasibility, design and more, being appointed the council's delivery partner from concept to completion.

The project was largely funded by DCC with additional funding of £2m (US$2.6m, €2.3m) from Rhyl Town Council and £800,000 (US$1m, €925,000) from the Welsh government.
