Leeds Grand Theatre reopened on 7 October following a major restoration project.
The first phase of the £31.5m refurbishment of the Grade II-listed theatre has created new seats in the stalls to provide better views and more leg room.
The second phase – due to start in summer 2007 – will revamp the adjacent Assembly Room to provide space for rehearsals and community use as well as a 350-seat auditorium. The work is expected to take one year.
Leeds Grand Theatre will also become the new permanent home for Opera North – the national opera company for the north of England.
Arts Council England contributed £15m towards the project and Leeds City Council – which owns the building – invested £5.5m. The Heritage Lottery Fund provided the rest.
Peter Hewitt, Arts Council England CEO, said: “The first phase has successfully combined the restoration of the traditional auditorium with improved access and technical facilities to benefit the audience and performers. Details: www.leeds.gov.uk
