London’s Battersea Power Station has reopened following a £9bn redevelopment project
Grade II listed, mixed-use 42-acre site provides a new, upscale blend of residential and leisure facilities
Luxury London health club Third Space and BXR to launch in 2023 – boutique studios BMF and Boom Cycle are up and running
Residents have access to fully-equipped gym and The Spring spa, which includes a sauna, Jacuzzi and 20m, three-lane swimming pool
Third Space and BXR are among the wellness operators slated to open at London’s Battersea Power Station development in 2023, with others, including Boom Cycle and Be Military Fit (BMF) already trading.

The Battersea partially opened this month following a £9bn (US$10.3bn) redevelopment project, with the Grade II listed, mixed-use 42-acre site creating a new quarter for London with an upscale blend of residential and leisure facilities.

Law firm Shoosmiths helped Third Space secure a space on Battersea's pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard, just south of the power station and near the Underground station. The chain is aiming to operate 11 clubs by the end of next year with an additional location also opening in Wimbledon.

“We can’t wait to continue expanding our current club network in Battersea and Wimbledon, reaching new areas in London,” said Colin Waggett, CEO of Third Space. “The inspiringly-designed clubs will provide the critical essentials of world-class training facilities, supported by best-in-class experts in a luxurious environment – all features that Third Space members have come to expect.”

In addition to these amenities, residents of the 254 apartments have exclusive access to a fully-equipped gym and a 1,500sq ft spa called The Spring – the result of a collaboration between design consultancy Coexistence and architects Sheppard Robson – which includes a sauna, hot tub and 20m three-lane swimming pool. Other facilities within the development include a private cinema, 24-hour concierge service, a business centre and a six-acre riverfront park, which is also open to the public.

Tabletennis operator Bounce will also open its latest London location at the Battersea, which will welcome the Turbine Theatre and the DNA VR centre.

Health and fitness operators will have a catchment that includes Battersea Power Station residents, workers from local businesses and residents from nearby Nine Elms, the location of both the new American Embassy and the new Apple headquarters in London. In addition, Uber Boats runs a connected riverboat service on the Thames every 20 minutes, with connections both up- and down-stream.

The original power station, one of the world’s largest brick buildings, was designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott in two phases between 1929 and 1953. The design process for the restoration project was led by architects Wilkinson Eyre with Foster + Partners and Gehry Partners also working on the scheme.

"We’ve taken great inspiration from Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in everything from the drama and scale right through to individual material choices and I hope this is reflected in the experience of residents and visitors,” said Sebastien Ricard, director at Wilkinson Eyre. "It's been a privilege to restore and transform this iconic building, not only saving and celebrating the original features, but creating interventions which bring the structure alive again.”

Battersea Power Station is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors, comprising Sime Darby, SP Setia Berhad, Permodalan Nasional Berhad and the Employees’ Provident Fund.

Management of the development is by British-based Battersea Power Station Development Company.
