W Hotels opens first Central American property with colourful W Panama
POSTED 10 Apr 2018 . BY Kim Megson

W Hotels Worldwide, owned by hospitality giant Marriott International, has opened a boutique property in Panama – the first W in Central America.

The W Panama is situated in the newly-opened, 50-storey Evolution Tower located near Uruguay Street in the Panama City’s business district.

The hotel’s design – created by Studio Gaia and the internal design team of W Hotels – was conceived to “blend centuries of history and culture with the nearby tropical paradise and trendy metropolitan spirit of Panama City.”

Distinct hues and textural contrasts inspired by Panama’s history and colorful indigenous patterns have been used, while the internationally important Panama Canal is directly referenced through the use of five shipping containers throughout the space – including in the lobby, on the pool deck and at the Cargo destination bar. Intended to “set the scene” for meetings and socialising, graffiti artist Oscar Melgar has given each a creative twist.

The hotel – which has 203 guest rooms, including 28 suites – is accessible from the 15th floor of the skyscraper, and provides sweeping views of the nearby bay and the Canal.

Each room features modern interpretations of handmade Mola fabrics and patterns from the indigenous communities of Guna and Emberá alongside expressive murals, floor-to-ceiling mirrors and expansive modern bathrooms.

The 1,600sq ft Extreme Wow Suite features a fully-functional DJ booth, built-in foosball table, private lounge area, rainfall shower and sunken bathtub.

Leisure amenities in the hotel include local restaurant Moró and 24/7 ‘food truck service’ La Cajita. There is also a 3,500sq ft FIT-branded health club, a W Hotels Away Spa and 21,000 sq ft of meeting and events spaces.

“Panama City is one of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in Central America, a fusion of new and old, east and west, business and hedonism,” said Anthony Ingham, global brand leader at W Hotels Worldwide.

“Like our guests, W Hotels seeks destinations that are inspiring and multi-dimensional so Panama City is a natural fit. This hotel embodies the spirit of Panama, showing off the style and energy of this diverse global hub with an intricate design that pays homage to both the history of the region and its bright future.”
