Populous lifts the lid on Indian football stadium plans

Sports architecture firm Populous have lifted the lid on their plans to design a 20,000-capacity football stadium in the Indian city of Pune.

As revealed by Sports Management last month, the studio behind the 2012 London Olympic Stadium in Stratford are working on the facility, which will be part of a large-scale sporting complex in the ambitious Dream City devised by Indian multinational organisation DSK Group.

The stadium will be home to I-League football club DSK Shivajians and Liverpool Football Club’s Indian academy, which has been set up in partnership with DSK. The academy pitches – which have already been built – will surround the stadium.

An indoor sports complex, aquatic centre and other multi-use venues such as a convention centre are being planned for the development, which will create locations for sport, events and entertainment.

A cricket facility and tennis stadium will also surround the project. The complex will have canopies for an entrance, pavilions and shaded interaction areas, and most of the sports buildings will be “open and transparent.”

While Populous is developing the masterplan and architectural design for the sports facilities, a closeby residential development is being designed by Middle East studio Samir Daoud.
