Yorkshire is divided in opinion over proposals to raze a 1920s cinema to make way for a new attraction.
Flamingo Land, Yorkshire’s biggest attraction, has placed a bid with the local council to take over the site and erect a rollercoaster, lighthouse, Space Shot drop tower and undercover botanic gardens.
Scarborough's Futurist Theatre - the site that would be demolished - opened in 1921, and closed its doors in early 2013. With a capacity of more than 2,000 seats, it was one of the biggest cinemas in the UK. The popular venue also held live concerts with Shirley Bassey and The Beatles among those who performed there.
Flamingo Land has said it would partner Yorkshire-based property developer GMI Estates for the project, dubbed Flamingo Land Coast.
