134m euro indoor sports and music arena for Copenhagen
POSTED 07 Mar 2013 . BY Aoife Dowling
A new multi-million euro sports, music and culture indoor arena, designed by C3XN, is set to launch in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Designed to hold between 12,500 and 15,000 spectators, the arena will be situated in the Ørestad-area of Denmark's capital, and is scheduled to be completed by Q3 2015.

The development team includes sports and venue specialists from AECOM, HKS Architects, Arup, ME Engineers and Planit.

Realdania and the City of Copenhagen have each made available DKK 325m (43.6m euro, £37.8m) for the project with the balance of monies coming from commercially backed funding.

The vision for the arena, which will be marketed nationally and internationally, is to strengthen sports life, culture, urban life and economic development in Denmark.

The 35,000 sq m (376,736sq ft) facility will have a capacity of 12,500 spectators for sporting events such as handball matches and a15, 000 seated and standing capacityfor concerts.

It will also feature large foyer areas and space for cafes, restaurants and bars, service areas for performers along with athletes and arena service functions.

Demark-based design firm C3XN created a wave-like semi-transparent facade that seemingly 'dances' above the surrounding podium to allow people on the outside to enjoy glimpses of the activities within.

The arena is designed so that it has the majority of the audience on three sides of the stage floor - but with the possibility of also having the audience on the fourth side at sporting events and special cultural events.

It will be able to host events and championships for sports such as ice hockey, handball, table tennis - and it will also be possible to hold swimming competitions. In addition, it will be constructed to hold concerts and cultural events such as Disney on Ice, the Appassionata horse show and Cirque du Soleil.
