New three-year strategy for Scottish museums and galleries
POSTED 14 Nov 2008 . BY Caroline Wilkinson
Museum Galleries Scotland (MGS) has published its three-year corporate plan detailing how it aims to develop the Scottish museums and galleries sector between 2008 and 2011.

The document lists 15 objectives and outlines three main priorities for the MSG: to review its various services for its members and the efficiency of its internal processes; to consolidate all data for the past three years into a Performance Management System, following its extensive restructuring scheme; and to build the sector's profile and new brand, which was established in 2007.

During this period MGS also aims to increase public investment to sustain the sector and raise the number and quality of visits to museums and galleries by promoting the important role the sector plays in communities and individual lives.

One MGS's main aims is to build an evidence base to produce strong arguments that influence government policy and in turn increase investment, as well as creating new opportunities by improving partnerships and sustainable relationships at national and regional levels.

In addition, MGS intends to deliver on the Scottish Government's national strategic objectives for Scotland, which include improving community cohesion by engaging with diverse audiences and young people and to provide a safe platform for raising challenging issues that effect social change and inequalities.

Other government aims include providing an accessible and informative learning environment, setting quality standards, promoting career development, to protect the historic landscape and to promote the Green Business Tourism Scheme.

MGS acts as the central funding body in charge of developing and advocating the scottish museums and galleries. It recently underwent a rebranding and was renamed from the Scottish Museums Council, to reflect the breadth of the sector.

MGS represents over 340 museums and galleries, and advises 32 local authorities, 162 independent trusts, seven regimental trusts, nine universities and three National Collections,
