Sentosa Sky Tower opens
POSTED 25 Mar 2004 . BY
An iconic viewing platform called The Carlsberg Sky Tower has opened on Singapore’s island resort of Sentosa.

At 110 metres, it is Singapore’s tallest public viewing tower and is just one of the brand new attractions opened as part of Sentosa’s $(S)3bn rejuvenation scheme to turn the island into a tourist destination.

During the ride, guests enter a large cabin structure and are lifted 130 metres above sea level, giving them 360 degree views of Sentosa, Singapore and the Southern islands of Indonesia.

With a cabin capacity of 72 and each ride lasting between five and seven minutes, the tower has an hourly capacity of 432 people.

The tower has been developed by Melchers Project Management, (MPM), manufactured by Huss Maschinenfabriken, is sponsored by Carlsberg beer and will be operated by the Sentosa Leisure Group.

A consortium of companies has invested in the tower and created a company called Sky Tower Pte. Those investors are MPM, Sentosa Leisure Group, NTUC and two private individuals. It is expected that the new attraction will see a return on its investment within two years.

Besides Sentosa, there are three similar towers in Asia: Kutai Island Indonesia, Jerodong park, Brunei and Ocean park, Hong Kong.

CEO of Sentosa Leisure Group, Darrell Metzger, says the tower will help attract more people to the island. “Even as we roll out our long-term plans to revamp Sentosa, we remain focused on offering new guest experiences every six to eight months."

Announcements about new hotels, a theme park and other visitor attractions as well as restaurants and possibly a casino on the island, are expected over the next 12 months. Details: +65 6279 1120
