Glasgow’s Calderpark Zoo closed for good on 25 August following a drop in visitor numbers and with debts of about £4m.
The attraction, first opened in July 1947, had been criticised by animal welfare groups – citing concerns about conditions – and calls were made for its closure.
However, a spokesperson for the zoo said that although some people might not have liked the "aesthetics" of the site, the welfare of the animals "had never been compromised".
Zoo staff are now working with the SSPCA to find homes for the animals, although there are worries that its collection of elderly bears may not be fit to be moved elsewhere.
The Zoological Society for Glasgow, which operates the site, no longer receives funding from the local authority but is hopeful of selling part of its land to help repay its creditors and to create a new visitor attraction.
