National exercise body launches annual survey
POSTED 22 Nov 2016 . BY Deven Pamben
The survey aims to encourage more people to take part in group exercise classes
Exercise, Movement and Dance Partnership (EMDP) - the national governing body for group exercise in the UK - has launched its annual survey, as it tries to help address inactivity in the country.

The aim of the survey is to encourage more people to take part in group exercise classes and is in line with Sport England’s new strategy to encourage physical activity, not just competitive sports.

The survey will gather information about satisfaction levels, motivations and participation levels of those who already take part in group exercise classes, including dance-fitness.

EMDP hopes to find out what barriers exist that stop people from taking part in classes and reasons for inactivity, in particular ‘drop-out’ within the teenage-girl market.

The survey is being conducted by EMDP’s Insight team in conjunction with YouGov.

The 2016 survey, published earlier this year, revealed that 3.86 million people in England take part in group exercise at least once a week and 34% (1.3 million) of these did not do any other physical activity before they started attending classes.

Ross Perriam EMDP chief executive, said: “The results of the survey will help us identify major trends and highlight any issues; we’ll be able to use this insight to help and support the rapidly growing number of fitness brands, including technology, in the sector. We all share the same vision – to make the UK more active.”

The survey can be accessed at www.yougov.com/emdp and will be live until mid December. Results are expected in February 2017.

There is an incentive of £150 gift vouchers for entering the study.
