Mack building Star Trek-themed coaster for Movie Park
POSTED 19 Jul 2016 . BY Alice Davis
Actors Leonard Nimoy, left, and William Shatner in Star Trek in 1968
Movie Park is boldly going where no attraction has gone before as it plans Europe’s first official Star Trek-themed rollercoaster.

The ride, which is set to open at the German park in 2017 to coincide with the attraction’s 20th birthday, is being designed and built by Mack Rides. It’s expected to be a launch coaster and will be sited near the entrance to the park. Planning has been approved and construction is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks.

Movie Park obtained the space voyage-themed IP for the coaster from CBS Consumer Products, meaning the coaster design can draw on a wealth of much-loved characters, including Spock, Captain Kirk and Sulu.

The Parques Reunidos-operated theme park said its decision to invest in this thrill coaster came from a desire to widen its appeal to teenagers and respond to customer feedback.

“Guest research, which is regularly carried out in the park, has provided us with a clear signal that visitors want a major thrill attraction,” said general manager Thorsten Backhaus.

Mack Rides’ CEO Christian Freiherr von Elverfeldt added: “With an average of 90 percent of our products produced for export, it’s really special for us to construct such a fantastic coaster in Movie Park Germany.”
