King’s Cross natural swimming pool by Ooze Architects set to open in April
POSTED 27 Mar 2015 . BY Katie Buckley
The pond will be in the the middle of a construction site when opened, but this will change as King's Cross develops Credit: Ooze Architects
Designed by Rotterdam-based Ooze Architects, a naturally filtered swimming pool is under construction in the heart of London’s King’s Cross redevelopment.

Ooze Architects, working in collaboration with Slovenia-based artist Marjetica Potrc, have come together to create the freshwater pond. The structure will be 10m (32ft) wide and 40m (131ft) long.

Completely chemical free, the pool, which will be used for swimming and outdoor activities, will be surrounded by a green landscape. By using a natural ‘closed-loop’ process, combining the wetlands and submerged water plants, the water will be filtered and remain clear.

Efa Pfannes, founder of Ooze Architects said: “The project is a small-scale enclaved environment; a living laboratory to test balance and to question a self-sustaining system including one nature cycle - water, land and the human body. Actors (visitors to the project) are part of the process. Visitors enter a living laboratory where they are aware of their relationship with nature, and about consequences of their interaction with nature and take responsibilities, they thus become actors.”

Ooze’s development is part of Argent’s overall masterplan for King’s Cross, the largest urban redevelopment project in Europe.

Although no specific opening date is set, the temporary pool should be accessible to the public in April.
