Bids put forward for Sheikh Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi
POSTED 28 Nov 2013 . BY Chris Dodd
The museum is to feature five gallery towers representing falcon wings.
Plans to build an innovative cultural museum designed by Foster + Partners in Abu Dhabi have moved a step closer following the proposal of 10 pre-qualified bids for the site's development.

The Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) plans to build the Sheikh Zayed National Museum in the Cultural District area of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.

The final deadline for submissions passed on 26 November, though it is not yet known how many of the pre-qualified bids made the cut-off time.

Some of the contractors thought to be bidding for the project include Ghantoot Group, Six Construct and China State with CCC and ACC. A decision on the winning bidders is expected to be announced in January 2014.

The museum is set to feature five towers housing five galleries, an education centre, a theatre, shops, cafes and an auditorium.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the centre's appearance is inspired by the dynamics of flight and the feathers of a falcon, reflecting Sheikh Zayed's love of falconry. The site's owners hope this will lead to the development of a cultural icon in the region.

Foster's designs feature five steel feathers, the tallest of which rises 125 metres, which will each contain a gallery space, allowing visitors to explore the history and culture of the UAE.

Once built, the attraction is to tell the story of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a man long-fabled for uniting the country and leading the region through an extended period of economic prosperity.

As well as mainstay features, the museum will also offer varying exhibitions, performances, activities and workshops to help educate both local and global communities.
