A design team has been selected for the renovation and expansion of the Kimball Art Center in Utah, US, which is home to Sundance House during the annual Sundance Film Festival.
Denmark-based
BIG and US-based
Architectural Nexus will lead the team that also includes Dunn Associates, VBFA, Envision Engineering and Big D on the proposed scheme.
Work is due to commence on the project in mid-2013, with the project to include the interior revamp of Kimball Art Center and the construction of a new building adjacent to the venue.
The design of the new-look facility has been inspired by its central Park City location and is to become a "natural incubator for public life" under the winning plans.
A twisting façade of the building will house a continuous spiral staircase for visitors to travel from ground floor level to the expansive roof terrace. Skylights will provide natural light.
BIG founding partner Bjarke Ingels said: "The raw charm of Park City and the Kimball Art Center is rooted in a culture of appropriating the structures of past industry to accommodate spaces for cultural life and leisure.
"Where the Coalition Building once stood as a landmark for Park City as a mining town - the new Kimball will be a beacon for Park City today as a home for an exploding cultural life and a sprawling creative community."
