Margie Petersen and the Margie and Robert E Petersen Foundation have handed US$100m (£60.4m, EUR68.1m) to the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, US.
The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation has confirmed that it has received a donation, which comprises a "substantial, unrestricted financial gift" and a matching challenge.
A 300,000sq ft (27,871sq m) building that has housed the attraction since 1994 is also part of the gift, along with a collection of cars assembled by the late Robert E Petersen.
Margie Petersen said: "My intent in doing this is to provide the Museum with the necessary resources to continue to enhance its collections, curatorial expertise and exhibitions.
"While I expect the resources of the Museum to be available to the world, this gift is especially designed to the benefit of the Los Angeles community where we made our lives together."
