A new multi-million pound outdoor education centre is set to be created in the heart of Exeter, Devon, after the local authority agreed to commit £2.7m towards the scheme.
Devon County Council (DCC) is now seeking additional funds towards the construction of the £5.7m Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre, having approved the release of proceeds from the sale of Exeter Airport.
The council has already contributed £170,000 towards securing planning consent for the development, while final negotiations are being carried out on the lease for the facility.
Haven Banks Outdoor Education Centre will offer facilities for people with disabilities and minority groups and individuals, including a climbing wall and activities such as archery, mountain biking and kayaking. Conference and corporate training facilities will also be included.
DCC leader John Hart said: "This new world class centre will provide a valuable facility for all young people from across the county, but particularly vulnerable youngsters and those who might not normally be able to use this kind of facility.
"The conference and corporate training facilities should also provide a boost to Exeter's economy, attracting Devon and nationwide delegates to the area."
