Sheffield International Venues (SIV) will host several national and international sporting events in the coming year – including the UK Athletics Championships at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield (EISS) – providing a boost to hotels in the city.
SIV – which operates 14 sites across the city – will host 25 events including the British Swimming Championships, FINA World Diving Championships and the English Table Tennis Championships at Ponds Forge; the qualifying rounds of the World Snooker Championships at EISS and the English Schools Athletics Championships at Don Valley Stadium.
Lorenzo Clark, SIV’s operations director, said: “Together with the city’s major Sports Events Unit, we have brought a diverse range of high profile sporting events plus an increasing number of training camps for sports and countries preparing for 2012.”
Clark pointed out how the events are helping tourism in the city. “Hotels in the city are seeing a direct link to room occupancy,” he said. “The Premier Inn near EISS and iceSheffield is now one of the busiest hotels in the group because so many athletes and officials are staying there.”
