State funding for new AU$428.3m museum in Perth

Western Australia's Liberal-National government has confirmed that it will provide funding for a new AU$428.3m (US$422m, EUR331m, £267m) museum at Perth Cultural Centre.

The new, contemporary building will be constructed on Francis Street, next to the Old Gaol; Hackett Hall; and Jubilee and Beaufort Street wings - all of which will be refurbished.

Perth's new museum will double the current exhibition space and will include new galleries based on three primary themes - Being Western Australian; Discovering Western Australia; and Exploring the World.

New spaces for major touring exhibitions and an interactive and experiential gallery that will connect visitors with behind-the-scenes research and conservation are also planned.

Meanwhile, the Collection and Research Centre in Welshpool will undergo a programme of "critical improvements" and will continue to house the museum's research laboratories.

An architectural brief will now be drawn up to determine the design of the new attraction. It is hoped the new State Museum will be completed in 2019-20.

John Day, state minister for culture and the arts, said: "This new museum will provide contemporary spaces and better public access with state-of-the art facilities and strong links to the regions.

"The size, design and form of the new museum will be determined at the design and development stage of the project and once the tender for the construction is awarded."

The museum is just one project to benefit as the result of recent funding announcements by the state government, with investment also earmarked for the city's new Perth Stadium.
