Following the live screening of a heart bypass operation earlier this year, the Science Museum’s Dana Centre is to broadcast a live and interactive neurosurgery operation from the USA this week.
The London-based centre faced strong criticism earlier this year when it screened a live heart operation. A number of organisations, including the British Heart Foundation, said the screening last spring was morally questionable and a ‘dubious’ exercise in attention seeking.
However, the operation went without a hitch and was defended by the centre as being of strong educational value.
This week’s brain surgery screening can be viewed at the centre from 6.30pm onwards on 28 October and spectators will have the opportunity to quiz the surgical team involved in the operation. Viewing is free but must be pre-booked at the centre.
The £8.25m Dana Centre which opened almost a year ago was created to deliver the latest in contemporary science to the public in new and innovative ways. Details: www.danacentre.org.uk
