Sport England targets low-income groups with new funding
POSTED 06 Nov 2018 . BY Tom Walker

A total of 34 projects have received National Lottery funding to support their work in tackling inactivity among people from lower socio-economic groups.

Those benefiting from the £3.3m investment include people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and victims of domestic abuse.

The largest award from the Tackling Inactivity and Economic Disadvantage (TIED) fund has been earmarked for Rugby League Cares, which will receive £390,000 towards its work to provide a social physical activity programme for men across Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Others to receive funding include EVA Women’s Aid in Redcar, which will receive £36,200 to help women who have been the victims of domestic abuse – or who have additional mental health needs – by aiming to improve their self-esteem, social skills and communication.

“We know that people on a low income can face many practical and emotional challenges that make it difficult for them to be as active as they would like to be," said Mike Diaper, executive director for tackling inactivity.

“So we’re working with community-focused organisations across the country to find ways to help people fit physical activity and sport into their lives in ways that work for them.

“The lessons we learn from these local projects will really help to shape our work with similar groups across the country.”
