A new exhibition exploring the truth behind the Christmas Truce matches of the First World War, as well as the role played by a number of footballers in the conflict, has been designed by Mather & Co.
‘The Greater Game – Football & The First World War’ opened at the National Football Museum in Manchester, UK on 19 December 2014 and runs until 6 September 2015.
“Even in some of the world’s darkest times, the love of football and the spirit of the game continues. This is captured beautifully in ‘The Greater Game’ with never before seen film footage and first-hand accounts,” commented museum director Kevin Moore.
“For the first time we are able to reveal the truth behind some of these stories. The historical artefacts on display are unrivalled and we hope that everyone will come to learn more about this fascinating period of footballing history.”
Artefacts on display in the free exhibition include a diary kept by Lt C.B. Brockbank of the 6th Bn Cheshire Regiment detailing the Christmas Day football game of 1914, and a ball kicked ‘over the top’ by Captain W.P. Nevill on the first day of The Somme which was used to give his men something to chase as they charged across ‘No Man's Land'.

Eye tracking AI Aquarium from ITRI helps visitors identify fish species |
 |
It can take a while for visitors to identify the species of fish they’re looking at in an
aquarium – trying to match them up with information on an information panel can take time
and isn’t always straightforward. Now a new aquarium by Taiwan’s Industrial Technology
Research Institute (ITRI) helps by exhibiting marine life information in real time
according to visitors’ line of sight. |
