Collinson to build Dr. Who's new Cardiff home

Lancashire-based Collinson has been selected to construct the new home for the Doctor Who Experience when it moves from its present London site to Cardiff.

The multi-sensory interactive exhibition is to relocate from its present home at Kensington Olympia to a brand new purpose-built residence in Cardiff, next to the BBC's Roath Lock Studios where the show will be filmed.

Working in conjunction with Cardiff City Council and the BBC, Collinson will design and construct the 3000cu m tensile membrane building, due for completion by summer 2012.

The structure's iconic shape is down to the unique nature of the design - differing ridge heights and the curved eaves of the steel frame are covered by a heavy duty architectural membrane producing smooth flowing lines.

Unlike those clients who select a white membrane cover to allow natural light to permeate the building, a special black-out membrane was chosen in this instance to ensure total darkness inside the facility in order to maximise the impact of special effects and lighting. The building will also feature an impressive glazed curtain wall on its front façade.

In addition to the main exhibition hall the attraction will feature a first floor mezzanine and two storey accommodation comprising reception area, café, classroom, kitchen, washrooms and offices.

The exhibition will take visitors on a journey through special effects, sets and memorabilia from the series, including a recreation of the modern Tardis.

Fans will be able to see brand new footage of current Doctor Matt Smith and will meet many of the Doctor's nemeses, from Daleks and Cybermen to Ice Warriors and the K-I robot.

Council leader Rodney Berman said: "This attraction is set to bring millions of pounds into the city's economy, and the benefits to Cardiff will be immense in terms of tourism."

Collinson to build Dr. Who's new Cardiff home
