Turbo Track flies into action at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
POSTED 30 Mar 2017 . BY Alice Davis
The rollercoaster launches guests from inside the park at 102kph through the famous glass funnel
The much-anticipated Turbo Track rollercoaster is now open at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, powering guests at speeds of 102kph (63mph) through the roof of the park, 64m (209ft) above the ground.

And as what goes up must come down, the zero-gravity plummet that follows rounds off the hair-raising experience.

"Today, we are celebrating the exceptional story of how a world-class rollercoaster came to be," said Jesse Vargas, general manager at Ferrari World. "Turbo Track isn't just a rollercoaster; it’s an experience that combines the passion rooted in Ferrari's traditions and values with the excitement of a unique thrill ride. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is going to be the location for mega rollercoaster enthusiasts all over the world."

With the new addition, the park, which has continued investment plans for the coming years, has a total of 37 rides and attractions. Three of them are new, opening within the past 12 months.

The launch coaster was designed and manufactured by Intamin, who also delivered the park's Formula Rossa and Flying Aces.

George Walker, creative director for the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi Phase II expansion, noted that the project offered its own unique challenges, especially how to assimilate such a feat of engineering and speed with the park's trademark sleek building.

"This coaster is inside an elegant building, so I felt we needed to respect that," said Walker. "This led to the elaborate track covering that makes the coaster look more like a futuristic shuttle gliding along a chute of light.

"The chasing LEDs that follow along with the vehicle turn the attraction into a mini 'show' for those watching from below. We took the concept of dropping a giant, clunky steel coaster into the middle of this elegant theme park, and turned it into a dazzling showpiece that is fun to watch and illuminates the entire space with colour and energy."
